"STUDY" visual development "City"

Next lesson was designing an old San Francisco. I quickly went to a "on the nose" idea of constructing the Golden Gate Bridge. For a number of reasons didn't fly.
I took some old San Francisco buildings and placed them within the city in a comp that showed off the buildings and scale of the town.

I was advised to focus on the center building and to in large the top of the buildings to help give depth to my city.
After redrawing it a lot of times.

"STUDY" visual development "guitars"

If its one thing I love more then a pencil its a guitar so I had a fun time with this study. I didn't go to crazy with the shapes because guitars are perfect as is but I did exaggerate a bit.
Happy with the guitars I was drawing I placed them in a room to see how they bond with each other. The thumb nail came out all neat and boring the way I would set it up at home and not for story.
Music Shop

I was advised not to hide them in the back ground and to over lap them so their shape would  pop. So I based it off a small music shop I like wheres theirs way more guitars then space.

"STUDY" visual development "The Kitchen"

After drawing lots of pots and pans the next step was placing them on the table. On my first go I scattered objects all over the place trying to fill every inch of the table and over worked the design. To simplify I took the hatchet out and grouped the pots making it a lot less crowded and neater.
Place my table as the center peace in a environment. A rundown kitchen at the bottom of the castle. Like the table I over crowded. Some advise was removing the table on the right to open some space and make it easier to enter and exit the scene.
good call :)

"STUDY" visual development "PLANES"

After drawing cars for a while it was easy jumping into planes and going crazy with shapes. I didn't take it as far as I did cars but it was way more fun drawing planes. good times drawing with my mentor.

"STUDY" visual development "CARS&TRUCKS"

This assignment was given to me by a mentor of mine. It was the first assignment of many that I'll be posting throughout this blog. The assignment was to design 3 vehicles of different time periods 1890's, 1950's, and 1970's.  The only advice was "Think CHARACTER, HISTORY, TIME PERIOD, STORY, and IMPERFECTION. rough and not cleaned up.
1950's concept car.

Exploring the interior of the car. I over did it with the V8 engine. Made it way to big it popped out of the hood and was a bit over kill for the design of the car. Also the seats are way to small for the car I don't know what I was thinking. It could of been easily corrected in Photoshop but it was hand drawn and I was asked to redraw it to learn from my mistakes.
Same with the 3 quarter back nothing adds up. Sizes are wrong and perspective is S*@#. Not paying attention and just trying to get it done. Shame on me!
Second time around I made sure things fit. Changed the body a bit to the 60's, a little sportier and dropped the engine to a little inline 6.
Perspective is off a bit but everything fits nicely. :)

Fun truck thumbnails :)

SKETCH BOOK " practice " DBZ

"the good old days" DragonBall concept

"my Axe Rider concept"

This sketch book is unique. Every page comes with a transparent page on top. So you can rough out your idea and then ink. This sketch book challenges me to get out on my comfort zone. I'm not to good with inking and I'v never tried using Prismacolor before but after the third drawing I was hooked. The hardest part of my process is coming up with what to draw. Sometimes its an idea or I'm inspired by other things. When roughing it out I try and put it down as fast as I can. I try to leave it unfinished so I don't draw the same thing twice. It takes my mind off "this has to be perfect" when that happens my hands get shaky and my lines suck.  Having to guess and rethink my design while I'm inking keeps it fun and helps me relax and just go with it. NO Ctr-Z !!

SKETCH BOOK " practice "

"robot mech stuff"

This kind of stuff is really fun to draw. You can go crazy and get away with so much. It still has to make some kind of sense but there's no right or wrong. The key is fun shapes and a whole lot of tiny unseen detail.

"STUDY" visual development 1890's vehicles.

 "1890's first concept"

On the first concept I kinda got caught with one design. I went straight for it without really thinking about it. In doing so the drawing came out big filling up the page. Which limited my design and I got caught up with detail. Drawing small allows you to experiment with different shapes and sizes. Big, medium and small. It also allows you to pick out key parts that makes your character stand out. As in where to put detail and where not to add detail. Best part of drawing small it makes it easy to move on and try something new. instead of  trying to make it perfect and over working your design. Like my first concept. "lesson one"

"back to the drawing board"

Starting fresh! Drawing small thumb nails thinking about silhouette and crazy shapes. I liked "A" it Looked like a baby carriage for old people.

"Final sketch"

No way could I have gotten these shapes if i had drawn it big. It Turned out to be some old villain's getaway car. making the car material metal and somewhat steam punk adds to the character and story. The futuristic motor might be a tad to much but a villain needs to get in and out quick.

                                                                    "NIGHTCAP"
My Sketch book is full of random stuff. mostly character design like this concept alligator of mine named Todo and other type of visual development.

                                                                  "do you fear death?"
